3 reasons why interior design is the sexiest industry

First things first. The age-old question of what exactly does it mean to be sexy?

Our oldest and most trusted friend, Merriam-Webster, defines it as two things:

  1. sexually suggestive or stimulating

  2. generally attractive or interesting

It's quite obvious these are both objective definitions. As we all perceive attractiveness & sexuality differently. However, Interior Design defies the objectivity of those statements and fulfills both definitions. Keep reading to find out how interior design can make your life a little bit sexier. *wink wink*

For starters, Interior Design is like functional living art, it should provide some kind of an emotional response. It could be anything from a sense of peace that allows you to relax to a place that invigorates and urges you to explore.

  1. Interior design appeals to all of the senses

  • See: Colors, patterns, lighting

  • Feel: Materiality: fabrics, metal, stone, wood

  • Smell: Wooden materials, candles, diffusers

  • Hear: Noise cancelation or enhancement

  • Taste: (you may not taste the actual interior design, but you do eat your food inside the designed spaces .. which I’m going to count!)

When something appeals to all the senses, it is inherently, sensual. In the same breath, when something is sensual, it in many ways, can be synonymous with being sexy.

2. Interior design is self-expressive and promotes confidence

In the same way, fashion allows you to feel more confident and express who you are, your space, and the spaces that you’re drawn to represent the same thing. Having confidence in Interior Design can manifest itself in 2 ways.

  • 1. Authentic self-expression. Interior Design gives you a voice where words cannot. It challenges you to look inward. Who are you? What is your brand? What do you want to say or feel? That self and brand awareness will ultimately be transported into your design decisions.

  • 2. Being bold in your design decisions. Even if that boldness is not represented with highly saturated colors or weird furniture pieces. Boldness can be quiet, in the use of textures and monochrome color schemes. Being bold and confident is taking that authentic voice to say what you want, unapologetically.

Naturally, human beings tend to be drawn toward authenticity & confidence. When someone knows who they are and can communicate that (whether visually, written, verbally, etc.) it is sexy. (If you’ve been subjected to dating in today's world, you certainly know what I mean).

3. Interior Design is a cross-cultural, universal language

Interior Design is everywhere, at all times. Not only does it cross geographical borders, but it also spans across time, religion, ethnic & cultural backgrounds. It does not matter who you are, where you are, or what moment in human history you exist in, Interior Design is, was, and always will be prevalent in your life. (And might I add, that is just about the sexiest thing possible! Only narrowly edging out Channing Tatum of course).

Apart from following you everywhere you go, Interior Design can also speak in a universal language. Much like math and art, Interior Design can be understood by 2 people who may not even understand each other. It talks to you without words or letters, but rather with color, shapes, light, and texture. It is a way to communicate to others who you are. Are you a minimalist or maximalist, are you loud or quiet, are you an entertainer, traveler, and/or gardener, are you a dog, plant, and/or human parent, do you read, draw, or have a special hobby? Are you attracting a certain type of clientele? Are you trying to embrace your surroundings or transport people somewhere else? All of these answers are articulated through Interior Design and then communicated outward to those who inhabit its space.

Interior Design’s sensuality, authentic confidence, and cross-cultural universal language are what make it so sexy. It pulls you in and makes you feel seen, heard, safe, and understood. Attributes that are stimulating, attractive, and interesting, which, are also all simultaneously characteristics that we look for in a good romantic entanglement ;).
